WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM AN INDIVIDUAL CLINICAL SOMATIC EDUCATION SESSION?

In essence, at your first session, you can expect to discuss what’s brought you to Clinical Somatics and what your goals are. I’ll then assess what will be most beneficial for you, and will give you a hands-on ‘lesson’ in somatic movement, best suited to your needs on that day. The lesson generally lasts between 50 and 75 minutes, & essentially involves being guided, hands on, through gentle movements designed to increase your awareness of where you are tense, & maybe lack full muscle control & sensation. The movements, coupled with my hands-on feedback, help to bring increased awareness & sensation to such areas, thereby starting to make moving easier & free from pain.

You’ll also learn one or two movements to do daily at home, following each clinical session, designed to help you retain what you’ve learnt & start to move more freely & with more awareness.

Subsequent sessions will follow a similar pattern, working from your first session & your experience in response to doing somatic movements at home (and in class, if you also attend small group movement classes or a workshop, for instance).

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO A CLINICAL SOMATIC EDUCATION CLINICAL SESSION, OR ESSENTIAL SOMATIC MOVEMENT CLASS?

In both clinical sessions and movement classes, you should wear clothes that are comfortable and allow you full freedom of movement - skirts, dresses & jeans are not appropriate. Please just ask me if you have any specific queries about what might be most suitable!

HOW MANY CLINICAL SOMATIC EDUCATION SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

It’s generally beneficial to start with between 3 & 5 clinical sessions to get the most from the work. This is partly to allow enough time to address all 3 of the stress reflexes that Clinical Somatic Education works with, & also to give space for you &/as your brain to take in & start actively engaging in the new information the clinical lessons provide.

But whether you have one or more sessions is of course entirely up to you! Everyone is different. You may, for instance, may wish to try some small group classes before booking a clinical session - or have a session & then a block of classes before coming back for further clinical work. There are no hard-&-fast rules.

Again, please do ask me if you have any queries about sessions & classes. (And note that sessions are cheaper if booked together as a block!)

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A BACH REMEDIES CONSULTATION?

I’ll invite you to tell me as much as you wish to about what has brought you to see me. We’ll discuss how you’re feeling, & what your current circumstances & concerns are. I’ll choose remedies for you based on what you tell me about your feelings, & will involve you by explaining & asking for your input into the remedy choices I make.

You’ll receive a treatment bottle personalised to your needs, & clear directions on how to take Bach remedies. (The same applies to follow-up consultations.) Sometimes one consultation is sufficient; often, people feel that 3 or 4 consultations are beneficial, especially as new feelings & emotions emerge & so different flower essences are indicated as time passes. (This is due to the process of ‘peeling the onion’.)

You can take Bach remedies safely alongside any other treatment. Your information & anything you tell me will remain completely confidential.

WHAT IS THE CLIENT AGREEMENT, & WHY DO I NEED TO SIGN ONE?

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM AN ESSENTIAL SOMATIC MOVEMENT CLASS?

WHAT IS CLINICAL SOMATICS?

Clinical Somatics is a safe, gentle system that educates your central nervous system to learn patterns of movement that help you move more easily & efficiently, easing & often eradicating chronic muscle pain & tightness - even in the long term. It’s based on the groundbreaking work of Thomas Hanna.

Essential Somatic Movement is taught in small group (or 1-2-1) movement classes as well as in hands-on Clinical Somatic Education ‘lessons’ for individuals. It should also be practised at home to be fully beneficial.

Clinical Somatics is an educative approach to pain removal & improved movement - it is not a therapy or treatment that is done ‘to’ you. Read more about it here.

WHAT ARE BACH FLOWER REMEDIES?

The flower remedies were discovered by Dr Edward Bach in the 1920s & 1930s, & his 38 remedies together form the basis of his system of emotional healing. The remedies are completely safe, can be taken alongside any other medication, & work to address our worries & concerns - whether emotional, physical or circumstantial - at an emotional level, bringing us a sense of greater ease & balance. Read more about the remedies here.
