An introductory class for those wanting to try out Essential Somatic Movements.

In class I’ll provide a short outline of how & why Clinical Somatics works, then we’ll investigate some of ts key movements, exploring breathing, tightness in the back and front of the body, tension in key areas including the hips & neck, and more — learning ways to relieve tightness and tension, and to move more easily, There will be time for questions after the class.

This workshop will introduce what Essential Somatic Movements are & help you identify & start to release areas of muscle tightness & tension that are holding you back from moving more freely...

You'll learn about the stress reflexes that can leave us 'stuck' in uncomfortable habituated patterns, & will do slow, gentle but powerful movement work to start to ease out of those patterns & into increased awareness of how YOU can take back control of your muscles & how you move through life :)

We'll work to release tension in the front of back of your body - with a focus on how this helps you breathe more efficiently - & also start to learn how to free up your sides so you can twist more freely & walk more smoothly, efficiently, & comfortably.

Block of 7 MOVEMENT CLASSES: Centre to Periphery: 28 May - 16 July

These classes are accessible to anyone & everyone - whatever your age, fitness level, or mobility - and use slow, gentle movement to increase your self-awareness and help you re-train your brain to make you move more easily, efficiently, and comfortably.

Whether you suffer from back pain, neck pain, sore hips or other conditions, or whether you ‘just’ want to explore how you can learn to move with more freedom & feel more at ease in your body, these classes are for you!

We will focus on how movement in the centre of the body is crucial to efficient movement in the periphery, and also to freedom from aches & pains that can plague us or flare up.

This block of 7 x 75-minute Essential Somatic Movement classes is designed to introduce you to Clinical Somatics and the movement practice initiated by Thomas Hanna and developed by Martha Peterson.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Each class is scheduled to run 2pm to 3.15pm on Tuesdays; let me know if you’d like to attend but can’t make this time of day/week as I am scheduling more classes shortly. NB: This class will not meet Tues 11th June, so last class will be Tues 16th July.

Essential Somatics Fundamentals Immersion Weekend [Edinburgh] w/ Martha Peterson

A wonderful opportunity to spend 2 days (9 to 5) being taught the fundamentals of Essential Somatic Movements by Martha Peterson CHSE who teaches and trains clinical somatic educators the world over!

The weekend provides an excellent introduction to or deepening of your own movement practice, and as well as spending lots of time of learning and fully appreciating fundamental movements, you will also get information about how Essential Somatic Movements work, why they are so effective, and how you might - from your individual perspective - get the most from your own practice as well as from classes and clinical sessions. There is plenty time, too, for discussion about what brought each one of us to the course, and what mobility, pain or other challenges we might face….

Along with two or more clinical somatic educators trained by Martha, I’ll be attending and helping out at this course, and am more than happy to answer any questions I can help you with. (My mum will be there too - at 86 years of age, and legally blind: Essential Somatics really IS for anyone - from elite athlete to anyone with physical challenges including mobility issues.)

9.30 - 10.15am: FREE ‘Essential Somatic Movement’ Class - a 45-minute taster class, in which you’ll experience a few basic movements to start to free up the centre of your body, and open up ways for you to free yourself from pain & move more easily & efficiently…

In the class, you’ll start to increase self-awareness of the stress reflex patterns you might get ‘stuck’ in, and learning how to release tension and relax your muscles without stretching. The class will start at 9.30am and is free to book - but please do just contact me ahead of time to make sure there’s a place for you :)

11am - A FREE Talk: a brief introduction to what Clinical Somatics is & how it works, with plenty time for your questions. Essential Somatic Movement: An Experiential Introduction

This workshop will be held at The Academy SPACE, in Sheffield. It will introduce and teach some basics of Essential Somatic Movement – an education practice in the tradition of existential philosopher and practitioner Thomas Hanna, which helps you feel more at ease in your body by increasing self-awareness and actively releasing muscle tension.

As this workshop’s primarily for counselling practitioners, I’ll outline ways the practice often has an emotional impact and resonance, how it might benefit clients & counsellors alike, and how it relates to work with trauma (such as Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing®). I’ll also outline what individual Clinical Somatics sessions involve, and allow time for questions and discussion.

We’ll do a little floor work, but most of the practical movements we’ll explore will be seated and standing. You’ll thereby start to experience the possibilities this practice opens up to eradicate tightness, tension, and discomfort in your body, enabling you to move more easily, with more awareness, and ultimately with more joy in your ‘soma’.

The workshop will be especially useful for those interested in MUS (medically unexplained symptoms) and trauma; Essential Somatics also speaks to experiences and causes of anxiety & depression.

Essential Somatic Movement Workshop: Accessing & Relaxing Your Back

This Essential Somatic Movement workshop will provide a brief outline of how clinical somatics works to bring awareness to muscle tension & the problems it causes (pain, stiffness, anxiety & more). There will be time to ask questions, and to let me know (if you’d like to) whether you feel you have problems or discomfort in particular areas of your back, and if so where and what helps - and what doesn’t help - you feel better.

The workshop will incorporate 2 full-length classes, as well as time for a cup of tea!


In the classes we will use slow, gentle, easy movements to explore the muscles of your whole body - including those involved in full breathing - and latterly, move to shift our focus to accessing & releasing tension in the different areas of your back.

ESSENTIAL SOMATIC CLASS: 5-WEEK BLOCK 'THE MYTH OF AGEING'

THE FIRST CLASS MEETING FOR A 5-CLASS BLOCK OF 75-MINUTE LESSONS. These classes together introduce and develop a range of fundamental essential somatic movements that address key aspects of Thomas Hanna’s philosophy of movement - and the ‘myth of ageing’ that his work is designed to challenge.

Working with simple movements - and building in variations as well as new movements as the 5 weeks progress - this set of classes works through how we experience and often get stuck in each of the 3 stress reflexes - and how we can move our way out of them by re-training our brains to increased self-awareness from the inside, to take back control and ease of our movements.

As with my other workshops and 1-2-1 movement classes, these classes are for you if you experience areas of tension in your body that are hard to let go; if you have muscle or joint pain that you’re told can’t be helped (especially if you’re told ‘it’s your age’); if you want to improve your enjoyment or performance of an activity such as yoga, running, cycling, or just walking the dog!

The classes are suitable for anyone - whatever your age, gender, & level of fitness. Please contact me directly to sign up for this 5-class block, as spaces are limited to a maximum of 5 people.
